Henry Fonda stars as Col. J. C. Kincaid, crusty patriarch of a Texas family. Kincaid's weak-willed son Floyd (George Grizzard) wants to get into the old man's good graces so that he can develop the Colonel's vast land ownings. Floyd arranges a city-wide celebration lauding Kincaid as the oldest living graduate of a nearby military academy. The festivities serve only to make the already sour Kincaid even more truculent and miserable. Adapted from Preston Jones' 1974 play and originally telecast live from Dallas' Southern Methodist University on April 7, 1980.

Lucy married at the turn of the last century, when she was fifteen and her husband was fifty. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood. Her story encompasses everything from the tragic death of a Confederate boy soldier to the feisty narrator's daily battles in the Home--complete with visits from a mohawk-coiffed candy-striper.

Ike Porter, a middle-aged deputy chief in charge of public relations, decides to leave his desk job to become a street cop.

Uttasit wants more of Val so he goes to look for Val, but he finds Vanee instead. Vanee is pregnant because of Uttasit and dies from abortion. Val wants to kill Uttasit, but before she can do anything, Noi breaks in and shoots down Uttasit and surrenders to the police. Later, Noi and Val find out that Ratch actually is Uttasit’s son.
